Out in Left

is a weekly newsletter about sports, politics, and European life by Brendan Dentino, an American abroad.

The newsletter is for people who care about things, and it’s about how those things are related.

Who is Brendan Dentino?

That is me: A writer, U.S. Navy veteran, and retired political staffer. My writing can be found in San Diego Magazine, Sunshine/Noir III, and various publications in the Substack-verse. I’m from New Jersey and lived twelve years in San Diego. I am now an expat in Paris.

How did Out in Left start?

The 2021-22 Major League Baseball lockout ruined my life, and I believe everything is political, so I needed a place to publish long-form essays about baseball through a sociopolitical lens. My first piece, which is still resonant today, is here:

Out in Left has since evolved to include all of life, because I am interested in and have thoughts on everything.

“I watch sports to get away from politics.”

Grow up.

Topics at Out in Left include:

  • Sports - especially baseball and soccer/football

  • Politics - that’s the ‘left’ in Out in Left

  • Urbanism - ban cars

  • Music - Oasis is the best band in the world
